SNAP is a foundational leadership method that I integrate across my consulting and leadership development work to help leaders move from reactive patterns to deliberate, strategic action.  

While many leadership frameworks work best under ideal circumstances, SNAP is designed for challenging situations when pressure mounts, priorities clash, and leaders are caught in constant firefighting rather than forward momentum.

The Challenge

When under pressure, we can get stuck in fast, automatic, and protective thinking. We react without separating facts from the stories we create in our minds.

This response is helpful if you’re facing immediate danger—like fighting a tiger or fleeing an angry mob. But when you’re navigating an email, a meeting, or an important decision, you need to shift into more deliberate, strategic thinking.

The Logic Behind SNAP

Grounded in cognitive behavioral techniques and more than 20 years of experience working in complex environments, SNAP equips leaders with a practical, real‑time method to shift thinking and behavior under pressure.

SNAP is built on a simple principle: in complex situations, reactive thinking drives unproductive behaviors and slows progress. By interrupting that pattern and shifting to more deliberate thinking, leaders can make clearer decisions and take more effective action. Each step in SNAP pairs a focused action with a guiding question, helping leaders move from reacting to what feels urgent to making progress on what truly matters.

When to Use SNAP

Use SNAP whenever pressure, complexity, or competing priorities start pulling you into reactive thinking.

SNAP is designed for real‑time application. It helps you pause, refocus on what is within your control, and take deliberate action to keep progress moving—especially in fast‑paced or uncertain environments.

Use SNAP:

  • When decisions stall or get second‑guessed
  • When discussions circle without resolution
  • When urgency begins to override priorities
  • When you feel pulled into managing noise instead of advancing goals

SNAP in Action

Before SNAP

In this phase, the team is operating reactively, caught in the urgency of the moment. Conversations center on what is going wrong or what could go wrong, rather than what can be done. Hesitation sets in as leaders second-guess decisions, weighing risks without clear direction. Discussions become circular, with the same issues resurfacing without resolution. 

After Applying SNAP

The team pauses and takes a more structured approach. They stop reactivity by asking, “What evidence do we have?” separating assumptions from facts.
